Learn WordPress - Creating a Homepage With a Permanent Intro and News Updates
By peteratomic
If you've ever wondered how you can have a homepage that displays your latest news but has a permanent message stuck to the top of the page (which is good for SEO and first time visitors) then this video tutorial explains everything you need to do.
The process is pretty straightforward, but as with all things, there are always ways to dive a little deeper and this video tries to do just that. Discover the treasures hidden in WordPress' depths.
One way to make this layout approach extra sexy is to add an animated slideshow or promotional slider as the sticky post at the top of the page. The process is exactly the same; all you need to do is install one of those plugins (the links above go to hubs that explain how to install and configure them) and then add the plugin's shortcode to the sticky post.
A shortcode is a Wordpress convention that uses a small piece of code like [slider="1"] to display special content set up elsewhere within Wordpress, usually in the plugin's settings.
Using an animation plugin to rotate between images can give your homepage added appeal, but still have the SEO advantage of constant blog updates on your homepage. It's a great way of capturing the attention of first time visitors whilst keeping returning visitors happy with fresh content!
